White Mulberry Leaf For Weight Loss

You may not hear as much about the benefits of white mulberry leaf for weight loss as you do about, say, GLP-1 drugs. But this herb has more clinical data behind it than a lot of other options out there.

A lot of the excitement for this ingredient can be traced back to one key compound: 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ). It slows how quickly carbs get digested, which has been shown to reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes by up to 40% and insulin responses by 41%!1

Lower insulin means less fat storage, fewer crashes, and less food noise. Learn more about why white mulberry extract is one of the most important players in our GLP-1 probiotic formula.*

Key Takeaways

  • The DNJ in white mulberry leaf slows down how fast carbs get broken down into sugar.2
  • A review of 13 studies confirmed that white mulberry leaf could lower blood sugar and insulin after meals.3
  • There is also reason to believe this ingredient can improve cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and lower blood pressure.4
  • White mulberry leaf works best alongside other clinically studied ingredients such as postbiotics, fenugreek, chromium, and vitamins D3 + B12.*

Overview of White Mulberry Leaf

White mulberry (AKA Morus alba) comes from Central Asia, where it has been integral to traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It was first used in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, one of the oldest known pharmacopoeias. There, it was prescribed for managing blood sugar, supporting respiratory health, and easing fever.

Today, we know a lot more about why TCM practitioners were so passionate about its healing power. White mulberry leaves contain flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds, all of which are bursting with potential. But one in particular gets the most attention: DNJ. It’s a naturally occurring iminosugar with a really close molecular structure to glucose.

It’s because of this similarity that DNJ can bind to alpha-glucosidase enzymes in the small intestine. Those same enzymes are in charge of breaking down complex carbohydrates and sucrose into the glucose your body actually uses.

It’s actually more effective at inhibiting alpha-glucosidase than prescription drugs designed to do the same thing - up to 4.5x more effective, to be exact.2 That’s where a lot of the benefits of white mulberry leaf for weight loss come from.

Benefits of White Mulberry Leaf For Weight Loss

Your body breaks carbs down into glucose after you eat them, and that glucose gets absorbed fast. This spikes blood sugar, which is followed by a corresponding insulin spike. The body stores energy as fat when high insulin is present, and chooses to burn carbs over fatty acids. This can make weight management difficult if it’s a constant cycle repeating after each meal.

The DNJ in white mulberry leaf stops the pattern, according to recent research. A 2021 study saw that peak glucose dropped 40% while peak insulin dropped 41% when healthy adults were given a 250mg dose of mulberry leaf extract.1

Andrew Gallagher, Global Head of Science at Phynova, does a nice job explaining why keeping insulin under control is so important for healthy weight management. “When you have a big insulin spike, your body will preferentially burn carbohydrates for energy. With a low insulin spike, your body will rather burn fatty acids.”5

The appetite side of things is just as relevant, though. Partially digested carbs sitting in the upper gut can make their way deeper into the intestine, where they trigger hormones associated with fullness (GLP-1, PYY, and CCK). This makes it easier to stop eating, supporting calorie restriction without it feeling as if you’re starving yourself.3

What Else Can White Mulberry Leaf Do?

We know you came here curious about the benefits of white mulberry leaf for weight loss, but it can actually do quite a bit more for human health.

One study measured both metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes when obese individuals supplemented with mulberry. Triglycerides in the mulberry group dropped from 215 to 201 mg/dL, while climbing to 260 mg/dL in placebo. A key marker of systemic inflammation (C-reactive protein) came down quite a bit, too. Systolic blood pressure improved as well.4

Are There Any Side Effects of White Mulberry Leaf?

White mulberry is generally regarded as safe. The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health did not find any harmful effects from supplementing with it.6

We even looked at a formal toxicology assessment and saw zero mortality, behavioral changes, or mutagenic activity at doses well above what you’d get through normal supplementation.7

There are some minor side effects, though:

  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Loose stools

These tend to improve within a few days of supplementation as the body gets used to the new stimulus. There’s only one other thing to consider for those on blood sugar medication: it may amplify the effects of these drugs. Talk to your doctor first.

How to Use White Mulberry Leaf For Weight Loss

You can defer to the research on white mulberry extract if you’re ready to add it to your weight management regimen. Studies used doses in the range of 125mg and 500mg.
